Advanced Accessibility Training

We're excited you're continuing your learning about digital accessibility. Making accessible content means equal access to education and employment, the services we provide, and above all, the Western experience. We can do our part by factoring accessibility into each step of creating digital content—from planning to publishing.

This training will cover:

  • What the document object model (DOM) is and how it relates to the accessibility tree
  • Advanced accessibility features and tips for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Accessibility-specific technologies like Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) and manual testing techniques.

Who should take the course?

This course is currently optional. It's still highly recommended for anyone at Western that builds websites through frameworks, web applications, software, or other digital platforms.

Prerequisites

You've completed the standard accessibility training. Strong familiarity with web development, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript recommended.

Training Topics

The advanced training covers the following topics:

  1. The DOM and Accessibility Tree: how HTML conveys meaning and functionality to assistive technology (AT) from the document object model (DOM).
  2. Semantic HTML: a refresh of HTML features from the standard course, as well as skip links, the tabindex attribute, and landmark elements.
  3. Accessible CSS: accessibility practices related to CSS like color contrast, state indicators, tab order, and responsive design.
  4. Accessible JavaScript: accessibility practices related to JavaScript like keyboard events, managing focus, and framework accessibility.
  5. Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA): what ARIA is, the five rules, and when to use it (and when not).
  6. Web Accessibility Testing: techniques for testing web accessibility, including keyboard navigation, color contrast modes, increased font size, and screen readers.
  7. Accessibility Case Studies: walkthroughs of creating accessible accordion and modal patterns.
